Dear James,

Here is your January massage newsletter.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and holiday season!

Note:

Your last appointment was Friday, July 31, 2009. It is time to make your next appointment. You are eligible for a $10 discount because you are on a regular appointment schedule. Referrals are the finest compliment I can receive, and I am grateful that you were pleased enough to recommend me to a friend. To show my thanks, you are eligible for a $10 discount on your next appointment.

I hope to see you soon.

Jim

The Tranquility Times

January Goings On:

*      I will be teaching at Sterling Health Center on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of January, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the evening, and sometimes both. If you need an appointment on Monday or Wednesday, please be sure to make those appointments soon. First come, first served.

*      My “Hand to Mouth” food drive is still going on. I’m offering up to $20 off your massage with your donation receipt. Click here to donate. Note: I only accept one discount per appointment; so if you are eligible for two, take the bigger one! $20 off for a $20 donation beats $10 off for being a firefighter.

*      I’m settling into the new office at Arapaho Gardens, and so far, loving it! How did I ever fit all that stuff into the little tiny office on Old Campbell Road?

*      There was no December newsletter, so I’m making up for it with an extra long one this month! I got lotsa stuff to tell you!

Winter Supplemental Newsletter:

*      A special full-color Winter Supplement is still available HERE as a PDF file.

There are some good articles in this issue:

*      Stop Judging Your Beautiful Self: Massage Fits You (Yes YOU!)

New clients are often self-conscious about their bodies. My regular clients know that my table is a safe, non-judgmental place to relax.

*      No Pain, No Gain? Bodywork Doesn’t Have to Hurt to be Effective

My attitude: if it hurts, they are doing it wrong!

NOW they tell us. J Time to cut back on sweets for the new year.

New Year, New You

The holiday season is stressful for many of us, whether it is due to low levels of sunlight, family issues, year-end projects, taking on too many responsibilities, worrying about next year’s personnel budget, or guilt from celebrating a bit too much. Every January, we breathe a sign of relief, now that the last year is over, and hope that the next year will be easier. And every January we make a sacred vow to ourselves to take better care of our bodies, our minds, and our spirits.

According to an AMTA poll, 57% of Americans said they were more stressed out in 2009 than the year before. Of those who discussed massage therapy with their doctors, 52% say their doctors strongly recommended/encouraged them to get a massage.

According to a 2006 survey, three out of four Americans (75 percent) claim their New Year's resolution is to focus on taking better care of themselves and achieving a more complete work/life balance. The study found that a majority of Americans believe massage is an effective way to relieve stress and a great way to relax as compared to other methods such as drinking a glass of wine or another alcoholic beverage or even exercising.

The benefits of massage therapy are well known, and if you are receiving this newsletter, then you already know the value of massage for relieving pain and stress. Personally, I get a massage once per week, but I have clients on regular schedules of 2 to 4 weeks. So why not make a New Year’s resolution to get on a regular massage schedule? Make massage a very pleasant part of your health maintenance routine.

A regular massage schedule can also save you money over randomly spaced appointments. I offer a $10 discount if you are on a regular appointment schedule. Click here for details.

Here’s another good article: Studies conclusively show massage therapy reduces stress, by Steve Ibach.

New (and Improved!) Office

My new office is in the Arapaho Gardens professional building at the corner of Arapaho and Rockingham. That’s about a mile west of Central Expressway at the Arapaho exit. It’s also almost exactly one mile due south of the old place on Old Campbell.

So far I’m lovin’ it. But you know that with any such major change we have to make some adjustments.

Things you need to know:

*      It’s on the 2nd floor, and it’s a little farther to walk. That’s why I obtained a wheelchair, for disabled or injured clients. I’ll be happy to come down to the parking lot to get you if you need it. Yes, there is an elevator.  J

*      For some reason that I can’t explain, they turn the lights out on the front walk at night. This wouldn’t be so bad, except that the front walk zigzags, and it’s easy to walk into the flower beds in the dark. We tenants are trying to get this issue resolved, but until then it would be best to park in the back for evening appointments. That’s a shorter walk anyway. J  (“The back” means the side opposite from the parking lot entrance. The building is equally accessible from all four sides.)

*      The building closes at 6:00 pm on weekdays and at 1:00 pm on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays. That means I have to come down to let you in after hours. It’s not really a hardship for you, because normally I will be waiting for you at the door. However, if you arrive early you will need to call me on your cell phone for access.

*      If you arrive while I’m in session with the previous client (and you’d have to be really early to do that!) you will have to wait in the lobby or your car.

Improvements:

*      It’s big. More than three times as big as the old place. I thought there would be too much space, but it’s all usable.

*      It’s private. There are no other tenants to wander through when we are discussing confidential health information.

*      It’s quiet. There is a security company next door, but they are hardly ever there.

*      There’s a window to let in a little natural sunlight.

*      I have better control over the room’s temperature.

*      Plenty of parking.

*      Handicapped parking on all four sides.

*      It just feels right. One client/friend told me, “Wow! This is nicer than your house!”

*      It’s big enough that I’ve been able to add some new amenities:

·         A hot towel cabi, so everyone can have fresh hot moist towels with your massage.

·         An infrared heat lamp installed over the table, so you can have instant warmth. If you are using minimal draping for Esalen massage you will love it, because it feels like sunshine on your bare skin… but without any damaging UV rays.

·         Potted plants, for beauty and fresher air.

·         A water source in the room for hydrotherapy.

·         Lots of closet space, to hide any clutter.

·         A marble-topped work-table, for oils, towels, etc.

·         A rolling buffet table, for hot stone or hydrotherapy treatments.

·         A portable heater and air conditioner, for those days when the building’s temperature does not fit our requirements.

·         A wheelchair for handicapped clients.

In general, it’s a vast improvement over the cramped, hot place I had before. I’ll be spending more time there BETWEEN appointments, so you have a better chance of snagging a last minute booking.

One sad footnote: the week after I moved out, the landlady at my old office passed away. She was 76, and had been in poor health for some time. Some of you may have met her. Although age and illness were slowing her down, she never lost her energy, her sense of humor, or her quick wit. And yes, she drove me nuts sometimes, but I couldn’t help but like her anyway. I’ll miss her.

Price Adjustment:

When settling up the tab, clients keep telling me, “That just doesn’t seem like enough money.” On the other hand, we’re in a recession. On the other hand, it’s been 2 years since the prices have changed. On the other hand… well, I’ve run out of hands.

So for 2010, I just tweaked the prices a little bit.

A one hour massage is still $70. But each additional half hour is now $25 instead of $20. That is still a steeply discounted rate.

All the extras (hot stones, spa package, house calls) have gone from $25 to $30.

The free stuff is still free.

In summary:

So that means the price of prepaid discount cards has changed a little bit too:

Upcoming Classes:

*      Massage for Couples

*      February 12, 2010, 6:30 pm - 10:30 pm

or

*      February 13, 2010, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Massaging your partner can be a warm, sensuous, romantic way to foster intimacy through loving touch. This course will be a few hours of unique quality time with your mate, learning how to give each other a safe, relaxing massage. Is there a better Valentine's gift than the gift of touch?

Sheets, tables, and oil will be provided. There will be light refreshments.  You will need to bring swim suits or underwear that you don’t mind getting a little oil on.

*          Infant Massage.

*      3/13/2010, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

This class is appropriate for and geared to parents, grandparents, and other infant caregivers. Massage therapists can receive CEU credits for the class as well.

Although it’s fun and rewarding to massage other people’s babies, the primary purpose of this class is to teach parents how to bond with, communicate with, calm, and soothe their own babies. The relationship between a parent and baby is enhanced and strengthened through the nurturing touch of infant massage. Parent’s often find that their baby sleeps better, fusses less, and gains more weight when massaged regularly.

A baby’s world is all about touch, and this course is intended to help you share your child’s world more effectively. It’s fun for you; it’s fun for your baby!

Sorry! We will not be using real babies in this course, so leave your little one with grandma. Or bring grandma and leave Junior with Auntie!
