Contraindications
Although there are
many reasons to get a regular massage,
there are some conditions that may make
massage unwise.
These are called "contraindications."
You should not get a
massage if you:
- have severe uncontrolled hypertension (high blood
pressure);
- are intoxicated;
- have an acute
infectious disease, such as pneumonia,
influenza, or
even a cold or fever;
- have toxemia or pre-eclampsia during
pregnancy;
- or if you have undergone chemotherapy within the
last 72 hours
You should get your doctor's approval
and discuss
your condition with your therapist if you have:
- edema (swelling)
- cancer
- psychosis
- scoliosis (crooked spine)
- diabetes
- severe asthma
- heart or lung disease
- osteoporosis
- or if you have had surgery recently.
Local Contraindications
It may be necessary for your therapist to avoid massaging
the portion of your body that is afflicted. Examples:
varicose veins, rashes, edema, hernia, tumors, bruises,
cuts, recent surgeries, or inflammation.
If you are
pregnant, it never
hurts to get a release
from your physician.
When in doubt, discuss the matter with your physician
before making an appointment. If you are under a physician's
care, I would be happy to work with your doctor to make sure
your therapy is safe and beneficial. Please have your doctor's
name and phone number on hand when you call for your
appointment. Please call 214-395-8000
for your
appointment, and if you have other concerns, please feel free to
discuss them as well.
