Pain During Massage
Have you ever heard the expression "No pain, no gain?" Well,
I don't believe it. In fact, I've declared
Tranquility
Time a "no pain zone."
I practice
Deep Tissue Massage
and Trigger Point Massage as
gently as possible. Now that is not to say that there will never be any discomfort. Sometimes working those knots
out of your muscles requires some pressure, and the feeling can
be rather intense. But I avoid giving you more pressure than you
need or want.
In order to determine how much pressure is required, I need
your help.
Sometimes my clients say, "Ooh, it hurts so
good!" By
that, they mean we've found that almost-pleasant therapeutic
ache that means the knots are dissolving away. But if we add
more pressure, we cross that invisible line into actual
pain and the body reacts
defensively by tensing up. We don't want that.
Only you know where that pain threshold lies, but working
together we can stay on its tolerable side. We also don't want
to overstimulate the body by doing a "search and destroy"
mission on every trigger point. Why add stress to an already
stressed-out body?
After all, therapeutic massage is also supposed to be
a relaxing, sensual pleasure. Much of the benefit of massage
comes from the calming touch of a good practitioner, so I try
not to let those stubborn little knots ruin your Tranquilty
Time.
