Lomilomi is Hawaiian for "massage."
Lomilomi practitioners use the palms, forearms, fingers,
knuckles, elbows, knees, feet, even sticks and stones.
Lomilomi practices varied by family, ahupuaʻa (traditional
region) and island.
Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in
four contexts:
- As a healing practice of native healers -- kahuna
lāʻau lapaʻau (healers) and kahuna hāhā
(diagnosticians)
- As a luxury and an aid to digestion, especially by
the ruling chiefs (aliʻi)
- As restorative massage within the family
- By ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian
martial arts)
I encorporate Lomilomi techniques into my practice
because they blend well with Esalen
massage. Lomi Lomi's slow, gentle rhythm is based on the
sound of ocean waves bathing a tropical beach, much like
Esalen. Like Esalen and unlike Swedish, Lomilomi treats the
body as a whole rather than systematically treating each
individual body part in turn. The result is a deeply
relaxing massage that leaves your body feeling integrated
and whole, rather than a collection of individually massaged
bits.
So
when you're in the mood for something a little different,
something sensuous and relaxing and soothing to the soul,
